Character Information:
Before events got really weird and really confusing, Dave grew up never knowing his real parents and lived with adoptive ones. His real mom unfortunately suffered from a severe case of bipolar disorder and he never met his real dad. He'd rather like to tell people far more interesting stories as to why he'd been put in foster care, but this was, sadly, the truth. Along his childhood timeline, he met his best and only friend John in school when they were both in a computer class together.

And other than a really bad fight with some bullies which resulted in Dave ending up in behavioral school, his adolescent years were pretty much unaccounted for. A couple of years out of high school, and that's when things progressively began to get a little bit odd.

One night at a party, Dave wonders off while John performs on stage and comes across a dog named Molly who appeared to be lost. Trying to be the good samaritan and return her, he ends up chasing her around the block until he eventually stumbles onto a group of shrieking teens and fake Jamaican. Dave's not impressed by the Jamaican's tricks, so the Jamaican decides to read his dreams for the price of one beer. He predicts the dream. Dave is unnerved by the accuracy and walks away; no beer is received as payment. A couple of hours later, John invites Dave to come over and hang out, but he can't go because they have to work. Both of them. Also, that fake Jamaican, Robert Marley, is coming. After vomiting up a bug, and Molly showing up at his car for a ride alone, Dave goes home and goes to bed.

Later that night, he gets woken up by John who is freaking out about monsters and some drug called soy sauce. He shows up at John's and tries to get him to go to the hospital, but they end up going to a Denny's instead. Inside the restaurant, Dave gets a call from John. But John is sitting next to him in the booth, and with no phone in his hand. After the strange phone call, Dave returns Molly to a girl named Cucumber -he means Amy- and goes to work. With John comatose and somehow still working his shift, Dave decides to call a priest and ask for advice. Things are relatively normal until the syringe that Dave had picked up at John's place suddenly stabs him in the leg. Then the priest's words start to become unnerving, like demonic unnerving, and then Morgan Freeman shows up. Morgan Freeman, aka Detective Lawrence Appleton, takes the two boys downtown and personally interrogates Dave. A series of strange effects from the sauce trigger in Dave. It is learned that Robert Marley, fake Jamaican, exploded earlier that morning. Then John dies.

Appleton goes to assist in that matter while Dave freaks out, and then he gets a call from John asking if he's died yet. A plan is made to leave the police station and get to Robert Marley's trailer. But there's one small problem, there is another cop is in the room with Dave. Except there isn't really. A fight ensues between the cop who may or may not really be there, and he escapes, paying $3.15 for a bratwurst only to discover that he can talk to John through it via the psychic connection.

Dave gets to the trailer and encounters some messed up stuff, but eventually finds a freezer containing two little pills of soy sauce. Appleton arrives outside the door, then the soy sauce turns into flies and attacks Dave; one goes down his throat. The other digs a hole into his cheek. An out of body experience occurs, and Dave is confronted by Appleton who has him assist with dosing the trailer in gasoline. As it turned out, some kid named Justin became infested with these little worm things when Robert Marley exploded. Appleton shoots Dave in the heart. But he doesn't die and wakes up in a trailer engulfed in flames. Thankfully he's saved by Molly who drives the car and crashes into the side of the trailer. She starts talking, saying they need to go to Las Vegas.

Pretending to be involved in some street deal, Dave acquires thousands of dollars and a gun. Going home to get ready for Vegas, he's confronted by Shitload, formally Justin, and is knocked out when he fails to kill him. Dave wakes up to find himself hostage in a van with several other partygoers of the previous night. One of them is Amy's brother, and the other a girl he may have a slight attraction to. After a long and incredibly boring ride, Shitload takes a small detour, shows off his skills, and then a FedEx box addressed from John waits at a door. Appleton shows up and Shitload gets away. As they're driving off to the desert, Appleton's eyes explode and release a bunch of little worm parasites that almost get Dave, but infect one of the partygoers instead.

The surviving members hijack a car from a newlywed and arrive in Vegas where they pose as band members for Elton John. They try to get in and see one Dr. Marconi, but Shitload shows up and a fight commences. Then he explodes. Creatures called wig monsters to show up and start mauling the audience. Amy's brother dies. Dr. Marconi shows up and turns a fountain into holy water. People's limbs start to separate from their bodies and form into a wall. A vortex appears and shadow people show up, but things come to an end shortly after.

Dave then loses about six months of his memory.

A half-year passes, Dave and his crush Jennifer Lopez (not that Jennifer Lopez) have an on again off again relationship. Someone spies on Dave from inside his TV. John tries threatening it with his nudity, but that doesn't work. And other than some occasional sightseeing of the bizarre which escalated into a developing fanbase, the summer is forgettable.

Although, one summer, Dave gets a call from John stating that his uncle Drake saw Molly the dog murder a news reporter. The two end up at a house and witness Molly floating in midair chanting something about Korrok. A shocked woman, Krissy, sits in bewilderment over the murdered body. Molly comes outside and is fed a mint and explodes. After that, a rather uncalled sports broadcast is aired and is revealed that the man who had made the announcement, Danny Wexler, is possessed.

Dave and John take a trip over to his place and discover that they just missed him by seconds. They follow him and end up in a car chase involving a man-made entirely out of cockroaches. Krissy shows up and the three drive over to the Mall of the Dead and wander around the abandoned building in a video game scenario. They make it to Wexler who looks done for when Dave is suddenly possessed by the same entity that got Wexler. Dave then shoots John multiple times, seemingly killing him. But John doesn't die. Dave has the entity exorcised, and Krissy, now being possessed herself, is able to kill it, saving the day.

More time passes and John calls Dave about a missing girl named Amy Sullivan. He ends up losing thirty minutes after the phonecall; seeing a trail of footprints leading outside to the shed. Ignoring it for now, Dave arrives at Amy's house and realizes that it's the Amy he went to behavioral school with. Amy shows up in her home unharmed, and an unexploded Molly as well. There's also a flying jellyfish in one of the rooms humping a ceiling light, several video cameras in the house, and a bag of fat. The footprint mystery gets to Dave and he has to run home to check that out and discovers a body in his shed. Realizing he can't bring himself to look at it, he gets hijacked by a man, Robert North, who is not from this world.

He gets away, goes back to Amy's and confines in John, telling him that he may be responsible for the death of someone. Dave stays behind in case Amy disappears again and everyone else leaves. He explores her basement, discovering more about Amy's brother and then goes home to go to sleep when he feels she's safe. A dream takes place with Robert North showing up, saying some words that appear to be killing Dave and then he ends up eating a spider. The next day, Dave, John, and Amy are at Denny's and overlook a chat transcript where Amy and her friends chat. As she goes out to take her dog for a walk, it appears that several of Amy's online friends are possessed by Korrok.

John ends up doing his own investigations while Dave agrees to go home with Amy and watch over her again. He ends up falling asleep but rushes to check up on Amy who then falls asleep and turns into a mechanical doll. Dave ends up losing time again, about three hours, and Amy comes back to her normal self. They both get in Dave's truck and Amy finds a pair of Ghost Vision goggles that enable her to see a mass of shadow people who begin to give chase. They end up reaching safety underneath a street lamp and reveal their pasts to one another before falling asleep. John finds them in the parking lot the next morning, discusses his adventures which involved foreign languages and gorilla-crab monsters, and convinces everyone to go back to the Mall of the Dead. But not before Dave encounters another moment of lost time and right at the end of a fight in which he beat a guy.

Going home, John and Dave take another dose of soy sauce and prepare for an epic battle. Dave finds a gift from Krissy in the mail, and both make a doggie treat shaped bomb and a flamethrower created from a super soaker. Molly ends up swallowing the bomb, but not before one half of her body is shaved. Feeding Molly plenty of upsetting foods so she'll expel the bomb from her body, the group end up back in the mall after several encounters with monsters. A phantom door appears and with Amy's phantom limb, they open it. Amy gets cut off from the group, so John, Dave, and Molly take an elevator up, up, and up for what seems like a long time before they enter a place that has faceless men, giant stirring pots of oily goo and children turning into clone pigs. They fight their way through these obstacles and are greeted by Robert North.

Robert's on their side, apparently, and sends them to another dimension titled Shit Narnia. They are greeted by the locals who appear to have been expecting them. A Largeman wearing an ominous mask speaks to them and explains how our world is very similar to theirs with the exception of one man's obsession with bestiality and mating a bull with a Clydesdale. While he died in our world, this man still lived in theirs and thus proceeded to create a machine that hadn't become sentient until after its creator finally died. This machine was referred to as Korrok.

After receiving a rather distasteful video of people being torn apart, but not killed, by spiders, John and Dave finally get the chance to meet Korrok. He is no more a machine than a mass of organs, limbs, and who knows what else that is. Denying their destinies -which consisted of being eaten by Korrok so he could gain their knowledge- they escape only to be confronted by the Largeman who says he has Amy. Dave watches in horror as Amy is injected with one of the parasite worms, and John comes through with a distraction. Molly shits out the bomb, and Dave rescues Amy. The bomb detonates just after they get to safety, and Robert greets them on the other end, killing Amy.

Dave tries to kill Robert, but he turns into a jellyfish and gets away. Leaving the portal, they enter their world and get a ride from Fred Durst who'd been dogging Dave all along. They eventually make it home when Amy suddenly appears from the shed, not dead. They all finally decide to take a look at the body in the shed and realize that it's Dave, the real Dave.

Realizing that he is no more than a clone of his former self, (Monster Dave now), the inhabitants of Shit Narnia had been creating replicas of people from his world only to replace them. Thus is how both Molly and Amy had been killed and somehow came back. Those that had died were the monster versions. With horror, Amy distances herself, but with a little help from John (and the gift from Krissy), he convinces her that monster Dave had been with them the entirely of the fight and hadn't tried to kill them.

Things are normal now. Amy goes off to college, Dave is put on suicide watch, and the two eventually become engaged.

Dave meets with a reporter named Arnie who appears to be interested in telling unique stories. But six hours later, things don't go so well and Dave goes off to play some basketball with John. They enter a portal they find on the court and see themselves in a post-apocalyptic world guarded with robot cops and a group of officials from the Human Liberation. Being told that they are destined to help save this world, Dave and John abandon their mission to go off and finish their basketball game.

Summer comes around again, and being drunk one night while celebrating John's birthday, the two stumble upon a military vehicle being guarded by lifesize G.I. Joes. There is also a green suitcase.

Cut to the present day; after a conversation with Amy from the computer, Dave is woken up by something biting his leg. The Bird-Eating Spider dubbed Sir! Dave manages to fight it off, but the bite paralyzes him. He tries calling for help but gets a picture of John's dick instead before he lies on the ground unmoving for several minutes. Dave is once again attacked by Sir after he can move, and is able to capture it under a laundry basket. An old school mate, now cop, named Frankie, shows up and begins to question Dave as Sir gets away. John arrives, and Sir makes his way down into Frankie's throat.

They get Frankie to the hospital. SWAT shows up and Frankie causes chaos. John and Dave are knocked out after a sonic boom from now spider-Frankie, and soon wake up to find the hospital being quarantined. Narrowly escaping the grasps of the army, the two make it out through a series of portal doors exclusive only to the users of soy sauce. Acting like everything is normal, Dave goes to a court-appointed psychiatrist appointment (because he attacked a pizza guy thinking it was a monster) and later talks with Amy who is extremely concerned about the news. Going out to grab a bite, when he comes home, an FBI agent named Lance Falconer waits for him at his house and asks questions. That evening, Dave is in the shower when Frankie shows up again, and a nest of baby parasitic spiders emerges from inside his bed.

John comes to the rescue and beheads Frankie, but Frankie is still able to getaway. Falconer comes back. John and a now naked Dave are questioned as the baby spiders start making their way across the house, and as Dave goes to show Falconer the shed, John sets the house on fire. Everyone shows up; news reporters, cops, guys in hazmat suits. The baby spiders emerge from the flames and start attacking them. Figuring that's good enough of a distraction, John and Dave make their way over to a Best Buy. Amy calls again after making it into town and arrives at Dave's burned down the house. Dave goes off to rescue her.

And that's when he gets a gun pointed at his face.

He wakes up in a dark basement with a little girl named Anna, but when the lights turn on, she's nowhere to be found. He's eventually led out and escorted to a very unpleasant meeting with that psychiatrist (Dr. Tennet) he'd been talking to, and eventually sent to a quarantine camp, a former hospital, where he discovers that he'd been there prior to his trip to the dark basement. He'd been helping inmates identify the real infected by locating giant spiders hiding in people's throats.

A batch of new arrivals show up and Dave does his "Spider Man" thing. Almost every one of the newbies die off. Dave almost dies too when he sits down on some grass but gets pulled back to a standing position, later watching in horror as some creature named Carlos turns an inmate into a puppet before dragging him underground.

Sometime after the misadventures of John and Amy, Dave discovers that the quarantine camp is being monitored with remote-controlled machines. He tries to sleep that evening and is woken up by Molly the dog. Through her POV, she manages to sneak in undetected. Everyone at the camp wants to know how she got in because surely there is a way out. But when Molly is convicted of killing someone on account of having a human spine in her mouth, they're led to the body (obviously killed by Carlos) and a tunnel possibly leading to the outside. Planning to keep it a secret, Dave only discusses an escape with a select few inmates. Dr. Marconi is in the hospital and has been ever since John called him and told him what was happening. Somewhere along the way of helping people, he got trapped inside when the place was turned into the quarantine camp.

Shortly after the outbreak, the military is dismissed and this group called REPER comes in to assist the problem. They aren't a part of any Government established operation. The select few try to make their escape through the tunnels. Dave is the last to go and keeping an eye out, when it's his turn he hesitates, eventually getting caught by the other inmates. They plan on killing him, but Dr. Marconi intervenes and says he'd like to speak to Dave before they go ahead and murder him. Talking with Marconi, Dave learns more about REPER and how the shadow people are involved in their schemes. There's also mention of a bomb heading to the quarantine camp.

John comes to the rescue like an action hero and crashes his Cadillac through the fence, asking Dave if he's still himself, then they proceed to get the hell out of there before those remote-controlled drones realize what's going on. After a chase through the woods by locals, John and Dave make their escape through a portal and end up at an asylum where Dave had been once held. Finding an RV, they stock up on supplies and see that Amy had been her. Thinking Amy may be dead, the two enter the asylum, bringing with them that green suitcase from one summer ago, and run into little Anna who claims Amy is alive. Dave takes the elevator ride with her, but John declines and takes the stairs instead. Eventually, they're all reunited with a very much alive Amy.

Inside a REPER control room, they learn that Amy helped with Dave's escape, and watch a video of Dr. Tennet mumbling about being unable to control the 'virus' and that a bomb is headed for the entire town and not just the quarantine camp. Carlos the monster shows up, and instead of making them marionettes, offers some guidance instead and stays behind with Anna as the others go off to save the town. The green suitcase is opened and reveals a furgun. The group travels through another set of portals and is chased by both military and REPER as Dr. Tennet spout lines like the villain he is. Eventually, the chaos leads them to an open field where the military begins to open fire on everyone.

Then time freezes.

The shadow people show up but are soon defeated by a painting strangely resembling a cross between Elvis and Jesus, that shoots a beam of light from its mouth. Dave offers to sacrifice himself when he sees a frozen bullet in midair about ready to kill a frozen Amy. Molly saves the day though, and one group effort of forming a human-shaped penis in the large field stops the town from being bombed.

A funeral after and visit from cool FBI agent Falconer, Christmas Eve Eve Eve (that's right) is celebrated. Mostly everyone goes on to live their temporary happily ever afters.

Personality:
First thing you should know about Dave is some of what he tells people may or may not be exaggerated to a point. He's dubbed himself an unreliable storyteller and tends to overemphasize the most notable being when he's nervous. He's the narrator of the story and the one explaining what's happened, so despite what he may have added in for dramatic effect, a lot of how he explains the tale describes his true character.

Dave presents himself in a manner of two ways; one of which is generally awkward, and the other sarcastic. He tends to show both emotions at given times. He replies with witty remarks but is incapable of trying to not look like an idiot and often feels like one after. He's not a happy person but explains his perspective of the world in a manner of humorous nature, ranging anywhere from dark to the toilet. He's a lonely soul with a bout of past regret. Though, he claims to regret nothing of his past mistakes.

Even though he's led a bad past, Dave keeps on keeping on with his head submerged somewhere in the middle of the glass. He's acknowledged that his childhood was miserable. He accepts that he can see monsters. He's quick to adjust to things and finds a way to deal with it. Despite problems both emotional and paranormal, Dave just tries to get on by living as normal of a life as anyone can under his situation. He shows happiness around his best friend John, and fiancé Amy, opening himself up to only these two people. He shows concern for their well being, especially Amy, and knows John is prepared for the random crap that occasionally comes to their lives. After all, it is usually John who drags them through it. All in all, Dave would risk his own life to protect the two most important people in his life.

One of the more troubling aspects of Dave's personality is something he refers to as a sickness, sometimes more commonly known as violent tendencies. He's angrily tempered, having earned several issues to show for his troubles; growing up with adopted parents, being bullied at school. And there have even been times when he's acted upon these tendencies, but he's since learned to control himself. He'll tell himself to stay calm, and if things piss him off that badly, he just walks away so he won't lose control. Despite Dave's temper, most of the things he hates are said inside of his head and any vocal threat goes about unheard of. In addition to his anger problems, Dave is just as frustrated. In fact, he's not a big fan of practical jokes and most people that know him, know to never pull any kind of prank on him.

He's told himself that he doesn't care about anyone, when in fact he's been shown to help or willingly give up his life for people. When John calls after the first encounter with soy sauce and the monsters, Dave comes over and tries to get him to go to the hospital, or when Krissy is possessed by the Wexler demon, Dave offers up his body so she wouldn't have to have that demon inside her. Then there was that time he ended up in a quarantine camp. He helped to identify the infected, only to watch what became of them after. These examples are proof that he does care, just that he doesn't want to admit he does.

However, since the events of the first book, Dave has grown to appreciate his friends more. He'd always cared about them, especially John, he had just been reluctant to admit it to himself. He considers his friends close; closer than his family who he rarely keeps in contact with. And he is distant with strangers, on account of his feelings of social awkwardness and now un-association with humanity- thank you soy sauce. He will purposely make himself difficult to get to know, but he does not go out of his way to avoid people, he is just not the one to start up a conversation about his personal life. Or start up any sort of conversation for that matter.

There's a part of Dave that wants to reconnect with people -despite always feeling a bit separated- and even though he's having a hard time relating, he'll keep trying to fit in as best he can. This is why he tries to go on living his life; working as a manager at a DVD store, dealing with his depression, occasionally fighting monsters. The monster thing has sort of becoming the norm now, but it's weighing down on him. Thus is why he jumps at the chance of being interviewed when he comes across a reporter who's interested in selling whacky stores. Well, not particularly jumped at the chance. A certain fiancé had talked him into going to meet the guy, but the fact remains that Dave does want to show the world who he is and get things out. He has a need to reach out and connect to people, tell his story and maybe get them to understand where he's coming from. But at times, Dave thinks he must really be crazy. Even if things hadn't turned out so well after his interview, Dave managed to go talk to a psychologist about his 'feelings' (even if they were court-ordered sessions). He's occasionally teased about being put on suicide watch by John, or reminded about his doctor's appointment from Amy. It's apparent that his friends see he's suffering from these issues.

Not only does Dave suffer from antisocial behavior, he constantly apologizes for being such a screw-up, thinking he can't do anything right and always putting himself down. It is to be noted that during his junior year of high school, Dave claims to have received a score of 30 on a PCL-R test after getting into a fight.

He is cautious, often reluctant to go on explorations with John. And when he does happen to find himself in trouble, Dave is impulsive, having no time to think of the consequences his actions may have caused. He is not a risk-taker. He doesn't even consider himself brave. However, he is quick to act when the lives of those he cares about are in danger. In fact, he claims to care more about the feelings and well being of others than himself. Take his fiancé for example; after the outbreak, when Amy was heading right into the center of the infection, Dave dropped everything and went out to rescue her. Dave is also quick to react when need be, especially when something threatens the well being of his friends, or even himself. Then, of course, he's clumsy, several times he's stumbled awkwardly over an object only to feel like a fool and proceed to make up his mistake by pretending to mean to do that.

It is also implied that Dave suffers from ADD. While easily distracted, his thoughts sometimes come out faster than he intended and he often has difficulty saying the right words. He also appears to be self-conscious. There are several examples in both books that show him criticizing his appearance and often wondering why Amy is his fiancé and why John is even his friend at all. And while John is more than happy to assist people with issues relating to their soy sauce skills, Dave is a bit more reluctant to be a spiritual investigator. He isn't as eager to accept the change from normal to paranormal and would've much rather preferred ignoring it and go on maintaining a regular life. But with John constantly calling, and Dave only going to shut him up, he eventually begins feeling a moral obligation to help. Still, he's hesitant to go ghost hunting with John even if he feels he's doing it for the good of others.
